Michael Moore has a lot of good points in this book. If half of the information in this book is true (and I believe it is), it is apparent that Americans are getting the wake-up call that we require. A very revealing book.
The book is definitely one-sided. I consider myself to be socially liberal and fiscally conservative. Even I found myself a little taken aback that Moore couldn't find anything positive to say about the state of the "state". I know that's not the purpose of the book, however, it is hard to take him as completely credible when he doesn't even allow for the illusion of a balanced look. Of particular annoyance to me was his chapter of "We're Number One". Not one positive remark in this chapter, when clearly America is number one in a whole host of positive things as well. I did not take this book as an assault on America, I just find it hard to lend credence to a host of the claims here, when there is no acknowledgement in the book of the good things that are going on...however few they may be.
That being said I found a lot of thought provoking items here. I liked that he did acknowledge that there is very little difference between Democrats and Republicans and really not that much difference between Bush's policies and Clinton's. I also thought his observations about Ken Lay, Enron, and our situation in the Middle East, and Bush's "Bite Me" foriegn policy were very astute and unfortunately pretty close to "nail on the head". Considering the book was was written well before Sept 11th, it's kind of humbling to know the signs have been there for a long time and we just didn't see it.
Good, eye-opening book. I think it is far more factual than hyperbole.

If you only read one book this year, read this one. Even if you cannot read, have someone read it to you.
Michael Moore has presented a brilliant, humorous and insightful look at what is going wrong in not only America, but the world at large if one is so inclined to think it out a little further.
The well-documented facts he stands behind lay waste to the late election disaster and are a source of scivvy-rash for staunch Republicans everywhere. His book asks how can they defend the actions of the Thief-In-Chief and his bumbling cohorts in suborning the Constitution to claim the top spot? There are just too many loose ends in this whole scenario.
Curious though, Bush ratings are at 75-80% approval, yet Michael's appearances across the country are completely packed, filled to overflowing. Those 100 people in Omaha used by the pollsters must not be reflecting the views of the nation. The news media would sure like us to believe that though.
Michael Moore is great at showing the stupidity and the lies that come through the media and from the conservative right, and even sometimes from the democrat left. I have long appreciated Moore's work for social jsutice and worker's rights and intelligent discourse and getting us to change our ways to take care of the planet, and to take care of each other.
This book falls short in a few places when his soapbox seems to large, and every now and again his statements are made with such a wide sweep, and not backed up with references, that I am left wondering if that's him being hyperbolic, rhetorical, or if he really thinks that his statement is true.
Overall, though, another important work from one of the few ordinary guys working hard to expose the truth, and expose the lies, of the republican right, of corporate america, and of others in the public sphere of discourse who put their own greed in front of the good of the people.
"Stupid White Men" is a liberal screed, skewering the Bush family, Republicans, whites, and the wealthy and blaming them for many of the modern world's ills. Ok, that seems pretty fun, and it is... for a while. Moore has done enough research from secondary sources and media websites that he's not making stuff up, but he's more of a savvy hobbyist than an expert in the fields he covers. And he covers a lot of ground the eleven chapters are divided thematically into discussions about things like the Bush family, lames whites, lame men, American parochialism, etc. He even helpfully documents his research in the "Notes and Sources" section, but it all comes from mainstream newspaper articles. That doesn't make it untrue, just underresearched, more of a college term paper than a serious look at the American system. When he offers advice, a la Thomas Friedman, on how to resolve the problems in the middle east or the former Yugoslavia, he's way out of his league.
The book is fun, it's cute, and it may give voice to some of the same outrage that you've felt from time to time. Moore unapologetically only provides one side of the story, coming off as more of a wiseacre who spends a lot of time trying to crack the code of modern political rhetoric. And that's ultimately the part of the book that gets tiring. The tone of voice just grates, until this reader was skimming through the paragraphs of breathless outrage in order to get to the substance of the arguments. Moore's writing style hovers somewhere between the apoplectic college sophomore writing for the school paper and the sarcastic talking heads who blow steam on Sunday morning political shows.
It's an interesting book, a fun weekend read, and some of the anecdotes are eye-opening. But it's not terribly serious or groundbreaking. A book to pass around to your friends without worrying about whether they ever return it to you.
