The Moorchild Aladdin Fantasy Eloise McGraw Books

I first read this book as a child and absolutely loved it. My copy was on the verge of falling apart so I had to get a another one for my kids to read. I read it aloud to my 8 year old, and it is still an excellent story. Some of the books I remember liking when I was young don't hold up when reading them to my children now as an adult, but this one is every bit as wonderful as I remembered.

There is a nice balance of realism, particularly regarding the relationships between different characters and developing the characters with depth and complexity, while also incorporating the magical and fantasy escapism. It is very well written, and engaging from the first pages. I would highly recommend as read aloud material for 7+ and independent reading for 9+, and most especially for anyone who has ever felt different or like they didn't fit in.

The Moorchild Aladdin Fantasy Eloise McGraw Books Reviews

This story will speak to lovers of fairy stories and those that feel out of sync with the world around them.
An overlooked children's classic, that is a brilliant and imaginative read.
One of the best stories about not quite fitting in we've ever read.
This book is amazing. I read it when I was little. I just finished reading it again. It has magic and fantasy creatures. Trying to find a place in the world and happy endings. A definite good read for sure. -). I will always cherish this book.
Do you feel different, unique, odd? This book helped me through my childhood for that reason. Honestly, as a 31 year old adult, I still sometimes read this book. You're never too old to read a legitimately good book.
I remember finding this in middle school and getting so sucked in that I read the book in one sitting (and was very tired at school the next day, oops). It faded from memory until I started recommending books to some neighborhood kids, so I picked it back up for a reread. I STILL find it very engrossing and ended up reading it in two sittings because it's so hard to put down. I really adore the thick cultural atmosphere of the setting and dialogue, which make the story seem so believable and interesting. I do wish the ending didn't feel so rushed, though. More time spent among the fey would have helped the pacing.
Wow, what a fabulous book! We are a Pagan homeschooling family with a 9-year-old daughter, for whom this book opened all kinds of topics for further learning beekeeping, animal husbandry, superstitions and magic, prejudice and curiosity, herbal medicine, and the role of the early Christian priests in Pagan Europe. And, of course, Fairies.

Eloise McGraw writes about Changelings from the point of view of one half Fairy, half Human, where does she belong? She ends up gracefully gifting herself everywhere she goes. For those who feel "out of place," the story offers a beautiful vision of how we can be ourselves and be generous to others at the same time. For feminists, it is a lovely story of conforming to expectations in some ways, while holding on to our core truths in others. I could go on and on about various layers of meaning in this book; it is so rich! Read it for yourself!

One note It's a great read-aloud for 9 year olds (who may be starting to feel out-of-place in some ways, themselves), but the dialect might make it hard for them to read to themselves.
