This series of books set in The Burren, Ireland, in the early 16th century is both entertaining and informative. The central character, the Lady Mara, is a judge, teacher, and proponent of Ireland's amazingly sophisticated and fair system of law and justice. This particular story posesa real mystery for Mara. The victim, an extremely unpleasant and hated man, dies from bee stings. How were the bees used as a murder weapon and who used them? In some ways the Lady Judge is similar to Sister Fidelma of the Peter Tremayne series but not as arrogant or headstrong. They both rely on sharp intelligence and a profound knowledge of Irish law to solve the mysteries. While Fidelma travels throughout her brother's kingdom of Munster and further afield, the Judge stays close to home in The Burren, a small area in west central Ireland. The same members of the community appear in the different novels so the reader gets to know them as real people. In addition we learn a great deal about the culture and folkways of that time. However, it is the law which governed their lives which is amazing. It was humane (no imprisonment or executions); women had equal rights to property, custody of children, divorce; and the poor and helpless were taken care of. The Roman Catholic Church and the English have a lot to answer for in doing away with this incredibly enlightened system of justice based on the Celtic tribal laws. I recommend strongly that the books be read in order so that the developing relationships and the back history of a number of characters can be understood. And it would help immensely if a map of The Burren were included in future books since this setting is so much a part of the stories.

Cora Harrison descriptions of the scenery and the customs of this era make you feel you are truly there. The characters are well defined. I especially enjoy the female perspective from these times.
An amazing story of self-less love and intrigue. It leaves one asking the question was it justified? Does the love justify the deed?
Ordered this book since it's a series that I am enjoying. The story tells the story of a female brehon in 1500's Ireland. Similar to the Fidelme, but a later time. Enjoyed it.
Another enjoyable book by Ms. Harrison, giving some of the history of early Ireland and the brehon class of lawyers.
This series focused on Brehon law and the lives of the people of the Burren is fascinating. The law is based on restitution to the wronged party and was so specific to the lives it governed, even to the keeping of bees. The mystery was easier to solve in this book but the lives of the people depicted are what matter more than the solution of the mystery. I am looking forward to reading the next in the series
Traveling through the Burren twice, I've felt the pull of the place--the great purple-gray slabs of rock and the bright flowers under a moody west-of-Ireland sky. Mara, Brehon of the Burren, is a strong, resilient, and brilliant woman with a sense of justice tempered by the wisdom of the ancient laws that structure her work and her life. I so enjoyed this glimpse of late-medieval Ireland as my own ancestors would have known it. One small addition to each novel would enhance my pleasure in this series--a glossary showing how to pronounce names of places and characters. I hate never being sure of the sounds, and Irish is such a lovely, poetic language that it deserves to be "heard" correctly in the reader's mind.
Another evocative and engaging mystery from Cora Harrison, this mystery involves Mara's investigation of a strange death, a death that she comes to believe is, in fact, a murder. Since the dead man is disliked by almost all (and hated by some), there is no shortage of suspects. Her attempt to find truth involves journey through the kingdom and into the past as she unravels a complex web of deceit.
This novel also continues to explore the Irish world, and Mara's students, lover, workers, and neighbors develop into more complex characters. The depth of their development as real people adds a luscious layer to this novel it would be very good just as a mystery; it is wonderful as a mystery set in a well drawn tapestry of Irish life, culture, and law.
