This is a much more simple, low drama story than most books- especially New Adult. The beginning is mostly an alternating POV story about two people finding each other and falling in love. It briefly felt close to a stream of consciousness or diary until the book gets going. For the most part the boy meets girl and falls in love is what the book consists of though there are some minor issues (again compared to the angst loaded stories that are out there) that rear their head. There is a climax dealing with said issues but it is a smaller one than you often find. I actually liked that as I was looking for a breezier book with a break from the over the top angst. But if you are an high angst addict look elsewhere.I liked that we had tattooed, pierced and/or brightly died hair for main characters and they weren't the "bad" boys and girls. I am tired of the trope and assumption that if someone has a tattoo, piercing, or drives a motorcycle (though no one drives one here) they are "bad" and must embrace every stereotypical bad boy behavior there is. The main male character,Owen, has a brief past that he is ashamed of but it is very tame in comparison to what you usually read. I thought it made him much more realistic. He is rounded out by a really cute family that he adores.
The main female, Nellie, has a family that didn't read quite so realistic but then again they don't really get that much page time except for what Nellie tells us. Also, there is a character Lucas that bordered on feeling like a plot device but I was okay with it.
All in all, it is a clean love story with some minor conflicts that come to a head for the climax. While it is clean, there are talk of a past sexual relationship so bear that in mind if you can't tolerate that sort of thing. I wouldn't have minded a little more steam at the very end (epilogue??) but I also didn't mind that it wasn't there. That is a take it or leave it thing for my tastes as I can enjoy books either way. I tend to be more focused on the love story aspects than the steam factor

This was a cutesy short NA read...
We got Nellie who's parents were cruel and I'm assuming she was an only child, I'm hoping anyway her parents were awful... She wanted everyone to think she was tough as nails, and I guess psychically she probably was. she'd have to be to get pushed around and slammed around being a roller derby girl.. but she was soft on the inside and I think she was looking for someone to love her because her parents so obviously didn't...
She had gotten screwed over by a long time boyfriend, but she didn't let that effect her really, which is surprising because for someone who was done so dirty by this ex and best friend, she really went into the relationship with Owen with no trust issues or bitterness from one relationship that bled into the new one... that's rare, especially for young girls and their first loves....
Owen had a lot in common with her, although he had pretty awesome parents and 2 brothers who seemed pretty cool, he was also screwed over by a long term relationship and best friend... And he DID come to the relationship with trust issues and bitterness toward his ex that really caused problems between them..
The characters in it were a little too immature for my liking, they didn't seem old enough to be getting engaged and stuff as quick as they were.... And Owens freak out in my opinion was justified...Only thing he done wrong was call her by his ex's name but seeing her with the guy who cheated with his first girlfriend would be hard on anyone, I didn't blame him and I thought she overreacted in a big way...
Yes, I'd have been irate that my fiance called me by another womans name, and i probably woulda knocked him upside the head, but goin all out and cancellin the wedding and makin such a big scene returnin the ring and stuff... I dunno it was all just a bit too overdone for me...
It was a good story though, cute... glad they worked it out... I probably won't read the next book in this series but, I liked this one enough to be glad I gave it a chance!
Love and Skate had me smiling ear to ear from the very first chapter. It had everything that I look for and love in a good romance novel. It had love, personal demons, characters you adore, family issues, a great plot, and a few twists along the way.
In this book my Felix you meet 2 very difference characters with a lot more in common then they think. She seems hard from the outside. With her crazy colored hair, tattoos, and roller derby attitude. He is a recovering alcoholic with a history that he is no proud of. Together, they just spark. It's love at first sight. It's their personal demons that threaten to tear them apart and have you turn pages like a mad man until the end.
I love that it was just about the emotional love and no "adult scenes" it was refreshing. To often all the romance novels are only about the sex with no plot or substance to the story. This is the exact opposite. I really feel that this book could be read by the young and old alike.
I really enjoy this book! I can't wait to read more by Lila Felix!

I'm absolutely crazy about The Black Family can't wait to devour Falcon's book How It Rolls Love and Skate #2!!!
One of the things I love most about Lila's books we don't have to suffer through love triangles as for me that really kills the story! 5 Stars All The Way!!!
